Where to Stay in Ella: The Best Hotels, Guesthouses, and Hostels for Every Budget (2024 Guide)
Looking for where to stay in Ella, Sri Lanka? Whether you’re looking for hostels or hotels, boutique stays, eco-luxury, or the perfect airbnb, our guide to Ella accommodation has you absolutely covered!
If you’re a traveller to Sri Lanka, there’s a 99.99% chance that you’ll find yourself in the lush hill country town of Ella (read our guide to the best things to do in Ella here!).
It is, after all, one of the country’s fastest-growing and most popular tourist destinations and from towering Ella Rock to the fog-covered Nine Arch Bridge, the infamous Kandy to Ella train through the tea plantations to the roaring Diyaluma Falls, many of our most favourite Sri Lankan adventures are found right here.
It also means there’s a 99.99% chance you’ll need to find a place to stay in Ella too! Luckily, accommodation here is both easily come by and as varied as its major attractions.
We first visited Ella four years ago, when it was just starting to show signs of stirring from a sleepy hill country town to a thriving tourist hub. Guesthouses were the main accommodation option (and the one we opted for), with a few larger-scale hotels scattered through.
On our return last year, this had all changed. Today, there are luxurious eco-hotels in the jungle canopy, hostels popping up in town, and several budget and mid-range hotels, guesthouses and Airbnbs offering the perfect pillow for any budget or travel style.
In this guide, we cover everything you need to know about Ella's accommodation, plus our recommendations for everything from luxurious stays to hostel beds, essential travel tips, and what to do in Ella while you’re there.

ELLA ACCOMMODATION | WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO
Before you book any accommodation in Ella, there are a few key things you should know:
LOCATION IS IMPORTANT
The distance between places might not look like much on a map, but you need to remember that this is hill country… which can mean surprisingly, steep and windy roads!
Choosing where to stay in Ella depends a lot on what you’d like to see and do in the town and surrounds while you’re there.
If you’re keen to spend more time near Little Adam’s Peak and the Nine Arch Bridge, book your accommodation further along the Ella-Passara road (the road leading up the hill from Ella town). You’ll be further from the heart of town (about 25 25-minute walk downhill — also dark at night!) but enjoy more tranquillity and easier access to these two attractions.
Alternatively, if Ella Rock and the buzz of Ella town is more your vibe, opt for accommodation closer to the town centre or railway station for the most convenient location.
Tuk tuks can be rented from just about anywhere too, so you can move easily between places if accessibility is an issue.
BOOK YOUR ACCOMMODATION IN ADVANCE
A few years ago, it was just fine to turn up in Ella without booking first, and easily find a room to stay. These days, thanks to Ella’s booming popularity we’d recommend booking at least a couple of days in advance, particularly in the busier peak seasons.
On our most recent trip, we left it to the morning of our trip there and had fairly slim pickings of places to stay left!

ELLA’S TOURISM BOOM MEANS ACCOMMODATION MIGHT BE MORE EXPENSIVE
We noticed a decent jump in accommodation prices in Ella from 2016 to our most recent, and this is due in large part to the tourism boom and rapid growth of the hospitality industry up there.
In several instances, we found prices had jumped by more than 20% since our first trip there, and certainly more than we’d paid for rooms in the south — so keep this in mind when budgeting for your trip!

NINE SKIES ELLA
Oh, if we could live at Nine Skies forever we simply would. Combining colonial heritage with contemporary facilities, Nine Skies is perfect for travellers seeking refined luxury in Ella.
Set on a working tea estate in the town of Demodara, just outside of Ella, the refurbished five-bedroom tea bungalow provides lavish bedrooms with period furnishings that open onto tea-fringed gardens. It feels a little old-English, like something you’d find nestled amongst the mountains of the Lake District.
Start your day with a cup or two of the perfect brew alongside traditional Sri Lankan breakfasts (nom), followed by tours amongst the hills, hiking trips, tea-estate visits – or just unwind leisurely by the pool with that amazing view.
Beyond the rooms, the estate houses a stunning infinity pool overlooking a cottage garden and endless tea fields, an exceptional on-site restaurant, and a relaxing lounge where delving deep into a book is the order of the day.
If you’re looking for a taste of the quintessential Sri Lankan tea-country lifestyle, in absolute luxury, this is the best hotel to stay at in Ella.

Nestled amongst the lush green rolling hills of the 98 Acres tea plantation, overlooking the beauty of Little Adam’s Peak and beyond, is the 98 Acres resort and spa; an elegant, sustainably-minded hotel blending luxury and nature with pretty bloody stunning results.
This is a great option for those seeking eco-friendly hotels in Sri Lanka (remember our fave Sri Lankan eco-hotel, Tri Lanka?!).
Most chalets are designed using upcycled and recyclable materials; discarded railway sleepers provide foundations, while locally sourced granite and timber, Illuk straw thatched roofs, and furniture designed by local expert artisans come together to create unique and luxurious rooms that celebrate the best of Sri Lanka.
The 98 Acres spa is also well worth a visit, with rooms overlooking the mountains and herbal treatments made from tea and other herbal plants grown on the 98 acre tea estate — a truly local Ella experience!
The resort is only a short tuk-tuk from the Ella train station, 10-minute walk to Little Adam’s Peak, and a 15-minute walk to the Nine Arch Bridge.

COUNTRY HOMES ELLA
This is a ‘country home’ in the truest sense of the word, with mountain-view suites that feel much more like mini self-contained apartments than a hotel room.
Country Homes’ vision is to provide a tranquil setting and personalised service to discerning travellers, and they’ve nailed it.
Furnished with pine and all the necessities you could need (mini fridge, tea and coffee station, etc!) while enjoying your Ella break, rooms are spacious and super comfy. Although be warned - tearing yourself from the wide-angle view of the valley below will be a fairly hard task!
The real stars of Country Homes are the family who own it and their staff though; they’re always there to welcome you with Sri Lankan hospitality, and even go the extra mile of bringing your breakfast up to your room each morning! Enjoying your morning cuppa with that view?! Bliss.

Morning Dew Boutique Hotel is all about the views… endless views over Ella Rock and Ella Gap which will leave your jaw firmly planted on the floor.

Large windows ensure plenty of natural light, while private balconies offer scenic views of the surrounding hills, perfect for your morning coffee.
The hotel features a stunning rooftop pool adorned with sun beds, the ultimate relaxation spot after a day of rigorous hiking. The on-site restaurant and bar offer an authentic taste of local cuisine, all while providing excellent views.

EKHO ELLA
Ecko Ella positions itself as a boutique hotel and while we’d question that, it still offers a more comfortable stay than a lot of the OG hotels in Ella.
The rooms are spacious, and equipped with every amenity one could want from a mid-range hotel. Yet, the hotel’s most extraordinary feature is, undeniably, the view. It offers unobstructed vistas of the Ella Gap and Ella Rock, best enjoyed from the magnificent terrace, home to a luxurious jacuzzi.
There’s also an onsite restaurant that serves Sri Lankan classics and a few Western options, best enjoyed on that terrace.

TIP TOP BOUTIQUE HOTEL
You might sense a running theme in Ella - of hotels with incredible views, but with slightly dated rooms, and Tip Top Boutique Hotel fits that mould perfectly. But don’t let that dissuade you from staying.
Immersed in nature, and close to the Nine Arch Bridge, the location is spot on. The rooms are large, making the hotel perfect for families, while each room has a balcony with incredible views (you can even see the train pass the Nine Arch Bridge).
The large outdoor pool and sun terrace have ridiculously good views, best enjoyed at sunset.
Overall, Tip Top Boutique Hotel is a perfect option for families, but don’t expect 5* luxury like some of the stays in the south of the country.

Admittedly, the name is rather random, but this small-design hotel is changing up Ella’s hotel scene.
Fusing industrial chic with the lush surrounds, BBQ Hub Ella provides a range of rooms that are minimalistic in detail, but big on amenities. You'll find plush beds, spacious showers, a TV, a desk, and enough space to do a yoga workout.

ROWINRICH COTTAGES
Rowinrich cottages have the best of both worlds in Ella; a perfect quiet mountain hideaway vibe while still being within walking distance of the Ella Railway Station and all the action of the main street.
The cottages are spacious loft-style, with terraces overlooking the jungle-clad valley and Ella Rock. Each cottage can fit 2-3 people comfortably, and there’s a mini fridge and kettle/tea station in each.
Right next to a gorgeous pine forest, you’ll fall asleep to the sounds of the surrounding nature (while you’re safely in your comfy bed with mosquito net, of course!) and the morning sun on your terrace balcony is the stuff of every traveller's or yogis dreams!
It's a perfect option for those looking for a clean, comfortable glam/backpacker stay… without having to deal with a randomly mixed dorm!
The road up to Rowinrich is a little potholed, and narrow, and there isn’t much parking - so if mobility is an issue for you, that’s something to keep in mind.

As we mentioned earlier, until recently guesthouses have been the more popular and frequently-used accommodation in Sri Lanka (particularly around Ella).
They tend to be the more affordable option, while staying with a local family in one of the most beautiful Hill Country regions in the world and getting to understand local life here is unbeatable.
It’s generally the way we choose to travel through Ella and beyond.
IDYLL HOMESTAY
Idyll Homestay was one of Ella’s very first official homestay offerings, starting with a single room in owner Anil’s home rented to travellers who passed through the town. Anil once worked in the tea plantations (very common employment for locals in Ella!) and saw it as an opportunity to create some extra cash for his family.
Today, the Idyll Homestay has five rooms available to guests, and Anil and his family — well known for going out of their way to make their visitors feel right at home — have created one of the best-loved homestays in Ella.
Whether it’s preparing an insanely good traditional Sri Lankan breakfast spread, or the best tips for what to see in Ella and surrounds, they’re always there to lend a hand or show travellers some genuine Sri Lankan hospitality (aka the best hospitality in the world!).
Idyll Homestay also run a shuttle service into town, and you can hire bikes from the family too.

CHAMODYA HOMESTAY
It’s a steep walk to get to your room at Chamodya Homestay, but the magnificent view of Ravana Falls and the mountainside from the balcony are worthy compensation for your workout.
All rooms here are en suite with hot water showers, and hosts Nilu and his family are friendly and super accommodating.
Ella town is just 10 minute’s walk away (follow the train tracks back into town), or 5 minutes by tuk-tuk. Nine Arch Bridge is a 10-15 minute walk away, and Ella Rock is just 1.5km away.
Breakfast is included, served on the sunny terrace overlooking Ella Gap. You can also order traditional Sri Lankan feasts for dinner (which we highly recommend!), cooked by the family themselves.

ARAWE RETREAT
Arawe Retreat is the epitome of local history meets modern style; a restored, 150-year-old colonial-era cottage in a quiet area overlooking a rice paddy just a few hundred metres from the heart of Ella.
This rustic little cottage is full of beautiful, thoughtful touches, like handmade macrame decorative pieces, plush furnishings, and a bathroom that could be straight out of a fancy resort spa. There are plenty of hang-out spaces to immerse yourself in the peace of your surroundings.
Host Ishaanke is always around with a friendly smile and a great recommendation for sightseeing in Ella, and his tasty breakfast and delicious traditional Sri Lankan feasts are not to be missed!
The famous Nine Arch Bridge is 15-20 minutes away, while Arawe Cottage also provides free pickup from Ella Station.

ELLA HOSTELS | THE BEST HOSTELS IN ELLA
Until recently, there hasn’t been a huge hostel scene in Sri Lanka (at least, not of the kind you’d expect to see throughout other parts of Asia).
For the most part, accommodation has tended to be hotels, or Airbnb / guesthouse style stays — but over the last three years of our travels through the country, we’ve noticed that this all seems to be changing. Several popular hostels have popped up now across the country, Ella included.
You can search for the best hostels in Ella on Hostelworld, and we’ve outlined our top recommendations (i.e. the ones we’d stay in ourselves!) below:
BUNK STATION HOSTEL
Bunk Station Hostel is a relative newcomer to the hostel scene in Ella (they opened in February 2019), and it’s made its mark in that time.
Now one of the most popular hostels in Ella, Bunk Station is the perfect place for travellers looking for a peaceful, friendly, and laid-back atmosphere along with brand spankin’ new, clean facilities.
There are four 8-10 bed dorms, both mixed and female-only, 24-hour hot water, plenty of cosy common areas to hang out with new friends in, and a kitchen to cook in if you’d like too. Breakfast, free tea and coffee is also provided, as well as board games and free wi-fi.
Bunk Station Hostel is well situated in between all the key highlights, while Ella town is just a 10-minute walk away.

HANGOVER HOSTEL ELLA
This was the fourth offering in the now 5-property-strong Hangover Hostel chain found across Sri Lanka (their other properties are at Colombo Airport, Sigiriya, Mirissa, and Arugam Bay) and another popular choice for travellers looking for good hostels in Sri Lanka.
Hangover Hostel Ella offers everything you’d expect from a great hostel stay; both dorms and private room options, stacks of communal spaces to hang out in, AC rooms (though you probably won’t need this, as Ella is much cooler than the rest of Sri Lanka!), a friendly and social vibe, a cafe/bar on-site, and bicycle hire to help you explore the surrounding area too.
Centrally located, it’s a few minutes walk from Ella train station and the lively main street too.

BACKPACKER’S PARADISE
This one is definitely for travellers looking for a unique place to stay in Ella; Backpacker’s Paradise offers the chance to camp in the lush, green fields of Ella in your own tent.
Solo and double tents are available, and they’re set up under the thatched roofs of the hostel, overlooking the tea gardens. There are lots of communal spaces to meet new friends, and the holy grail of all hostels: a decent communal kitchen you can whip up tasty meals in!
This is a taste of the simple life in the best way. And in what’s probably the best selling point ever…. there are a few puppies who call Backpacker’s Paradise home too!
Breakfast can be included for about £1, and wifi is available for £0.50 a day.

ECO-FRIENDLY HOTELS IN ELLA
You guys know that we’re all about sustainable travel, which also means sourcing and staying at the best sustainably-minded eco-friendly accommodation in the places we travel through as well.
Hotel chains can have some of the largest, most intensive carbon footprints, so to us, choosing accommodation that cares about reducing its impact on the local environment and community is vital.
Choosing to stay in a homestay or smaller, boutique hotel/hostels makes a world of difference to your impact when travelling. But there are also plenty of larger hotels making waves in providing sustainable accommodation in Sri Lanka.
In addition to the 98 Acres Resort (above), we recommend the following eco-friendly stays in Ella:
LIVING HERITAGE KOSLANDA
So Living Heritage Koslanda isn’t technically in Ella (it’s halfway between Ella and the Horton Plains), but for those looking for a boutique sustainable retreat, this is absolutely worth the visit.
Set on 80 acres in the heart of Sri Lanka’s hill country, in what was once virgin rainforest cleared for tea plantations until the 1950s, Living Heritage Koslanda used sustainably sourced local timber, clay bricks, tiles, and stones combined with ancient skills from the surrounding community of craftspeople to create their unique, beautiful buildings.
Living Heritage Koslanda is focused on community empowerment, providing training and employment for locals of all genders and ages — particularly for women, who are very underrepresented in both the workforce and tourism industry in Sri Lanka.
There are also a huge number of environmental initiatives in place here, including regenerating the surrounding forest (known as God’s Forest to locals), river, and waterfalls on their property, working to reintroduce several native species to the area, and a number of organic gardens where most of the restaurant produce is grown.
If you’re looking for a tranquil stay and to be immersed in nature while also supporting its regeneration, Living Heritage Koslanda is where it’s at.

ARANA ECO-LODGE AND YOGA CENTER
Those looking for budget-friendly unique sustainable accommodation closer to the action will be pleased to know that just 10 minutes walk from Ella town is the Arana Eco-Lodge and Yoga Center, a true retreat from the hustle and bustle of the popular backpacker area!
Arana is the simple way of pronouncing Aranyaya, or forest monastery, and there couldn’t possibly be a better way to describe this place. Accommodation is treehouse-style, literally built around the trunks of living trees, with natural wood, glass, stone, and cement used as building materials and furnishings.
This is the kind of place you come to switch off entirely from the modern world and enjoy the views or connect with your fellow humans instead; electronics have been limited in the rooms and Wi-Fi can only be found in the restaurant area (which also has plenty of vegan options for those looking!).
Traditional Sri Lankan cooking classes are available in the on-site restaurant, and you can book yourself into Kundalini yoga and meditation classes at the yoga studio.
The rest of the time? Enjoy the views, get to know the locals (plenty of wild birds, squirrels, and monkeys can be found around the property!), and relax in the tranquil setting.
