WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE BOOKING YOUR FAROE ISLANDS AIRBNB
Before we get to the good stuff, there are a couple of things we feel you should be aware of when booking your Faroe Islands airbnb, from minimum stays to when to book your accommodation.

THE FAROES ARE EXPENSIVE, AND SO IS THE ACCOMMODATION
The Faroes have a reputation for being expensive, and truthfully we can’t disagree with that reputation. That said, with a little forward planning and a lot of smart budgeting, you can absolutely have an amazing time here without breaking the bank.
Generally your biggest expense here will be accommodation, and unfortunately even the more budget stays here are more expensive than you’d find mid-range options for in other parts of Europe.
It’s our view that airbnbs provide the best value for money when it comes to Faroe Islands accommodation, but even then, take this as a warning that you’ll need to set aside a decent chunk of your travel budget for these!
TRAVELLING WITH A GROUP LOWERS THE COST
A private room in an airbnb in Tórshavn will generally set you back £45-60 per night, while the cost for a group of four bunking in a flat in Tórshavn for one night will start around £27 per person instead.
If you can, travelling in a group is by far the easiest way to cut down on your overall cost per person.
MOST AIRBNBS HAVE AT LEAST A 3-NIGHT MINIMUM
In our trawling of Airbnbs on the Faroe Islands, we discovered that most airbnbs here have a 3-night minimum stay, particularly through the peak summer months - so you’ll need to factor that into your planning when you’re mapping out your itinerary. That’s where basing yourself in one location, like Tórshavn, comes in super handy.
BOOK YOUR ACCOMMODATION WELL IN ADVANCE
While the number of airbnbs has definitely grown drastically over the past few years, there’s still a bit of an imbalance in Faroe Islands accommodation options vs the number of visitors arriving per year.
You’ll find accommodation here often books up months in advance (especially in summer, or around the Ólavsøka festival!) - so you’ll need to organise your stay pretty soon after you decide to visit.
TÓRSHAVN | FAROE ISLANDS AIRBNB
Now, if you’re already familiar with our other Faroe Islands travel guides, then you probably already know that we recommend basing yourself in Tórshavn during your stay here.
This is mostly down to convenience; you reap the benefit of being in a city with better access to supermarkets, restaurants and the like, while being within a close enough drive to all of the main attractions.
We based ourselves in Tórshavn for all but one night of our stay, and would definitely do the same again on any trip back again — plus the landscapes and roads are so beautiful that the extra time spent on the road never felt like a chore!
When booking your airbnb in Tórshavn, be sure to check whether parking is available - it’s super difficult to find parking that you don’t have to pay an arm and leg for in Tórshavn, and this’ll save you a massive headache!

HOUSE AT THE MARINA - 20 METRES FROM THE SEA, ARGIR
The House at the Marina is a gorgeous 3-bedroom house right next to the harbour, and is one of the oldest houses in Argir, an outer suburb of Tórshavn.
Built in 1875, the house is actually owned by the famous Faroese fashion designer behind Gudrun & Gudrun, which definitely explains the bright, airy renovation and utterly beautiful touches. White-painted wood-panelling with light timber finishes give it a dreamy beach shack vibe, while we’re suckers for a mid-century furniture, Turkish rugs and Smeg appliances - all of which can be found here!
The house sleeps six in three bedrooms (3 double beds), and has a fully equipped kitchen with a coffee maker, plus a spacious bathroom with a bath to warm your bones in after a long day of adventuring. Sitting at the kitchen table, you can watch the boats pass to and fro just outside the window and soak up all the ambiance.
There are free local buses that run from Argir to Tórshavn, and it only takes 20 minutes of walking to get to the city centre. A great option for friends travelling together or family groups looking for a getaway.

MODERN FLAT IN HEART OF TÓRSHAVN
This light, bright flat is right in the heart of Tórshavn, just a few minutes walk from the harbour, town centre, and the heart of Tinganes (the old town).

THE CABIN UPHILL, TÓRSHAVN
This cute, brightly painted studio just up the hill from the centre of town is a fab option for those seeking a great Faroe Islands airbnb on a budget.
The cosy cabin is a separate addition to the host’s property, and while it’s small it still has everything a traveller could need for a holiday stay; a small bathroom with shower and toilet, a kitchenette with sink, mini fridge, microwave oven and kettle, while the living room transforms into a comfy sofa bed for the evening. There’s a small table for meal times, while in the summer there’s also an outdoor area with garden furniture that can be used too.
It’s a 1.8 - 2km walk back into the centre of town, and 10-15 minutes walk to a supermarket nearby. Parking can be found in the area too.

If you’re flying into the Faroe Islands (which will be the majority of you), the island of Vágar where the airport is located will be your very first taste of the moody archipelago.
There are six villages on Vágar island: Sørvágar, Bøur, Gásadalur, Sandavágur, Miðvágur, Vatnsoyrar, and the island of Mykines also falls under the wider Vágar province too.
Beyond convenient access to the airport, booking your Faroe Islands airbnb on Vágar also affords easy access to some of the Faroes most spectacular sights; Múlafossur Waterfall near Gasadalur, and the hike to lake Sørvágsvatn (the famous ‘lake above the ocean’), and the ferry to Mykines which departs from Vágar harbour.
It’s a great place to base yourself for a few days while exploring these highlights, especially towards the start or end of your trip. Here are some of your Vágar options:
SØRVAGUR GUEST HOUSE NEAR AIRPORT, SØRVAGUR
The Sørvagur Guesthouse is where Faroese history meets modern life; a traditional Faroese cottage built in 1882 and renovated beautifully again in 2017.
Today, this Faroe Islands airbnb is a super comfortable and stylish contemporary option, full of Scandi furnishings, wood panelling, and all the mod-cons an adventurous traveller might need during their time here, including the all-important coffee maker and light-blocking blinds for the midnight sun months.
The kitchen is spacious, fully equipped, and basically all of our future home goals, while there are plenty of hangout spaces (with Netflix included) to relax in or take in the views over the bay between sightseeing missions.
The guesthouse is about 10-minutes walk from the ferry terminal for Mykines, and 10-minute drive to Gásadalur. The airport is a 5 minute drive away and the local grocery store is just around the corner.

GÁSADALUR, VÁGAR | FAROE ISLANDS AIRBNBS
One of the most famous of all the Faroese attractions is the stunning Múlafossur waterfall, located just south of Gásadalur village. Cascading straight into the North Atlantic, this waterfall is utterly majestic, and one place we’re happy to report is MUCH better in person.
The quaint little village of Gásadalur sits nestled into the backdrop of towering mountains and grass-covered fields, and until very recently, was only accessible via hike or helicopter from Sørvágur.
GÁSADALSGARÐUR GUESTHOUSE
Our very first night on the Faroe Islands was spent right here at the Gásadalsgarður Guesthouse, a gorgeous newly-built guesthouse on a working sheep farm just a hop, step, and jump from the famous Múlafossur waterfall (aka the waterfall into the sea).
You can book one of 4 private double rooms in the guesthouse, which also has a shared kitchen, shared living room (great for meeting fellow travellers!), and two shared bathrooms. It's a cosy, typically scandi-style little house, with views over traditional cabins and the bay outside. It’s only a couple of minutes’ walk down to the waterfall, which makes for a perfect sunrise photography mission.
There’s also a cafe on site serving up local Faroese food. Though do note, particularly for the non-meat eaters amongst you (like us!), that from mid-October the building is actually used as a slaughterhouse. While guests can also join the process if they’re there then, it's definitely something we’ll personally be skipping…!

MÚLAFOSSUR COTTAGES, GÁSADALUR
If we ever make it back to the Faroes and to Gásadalur (and we hope we do!), the cosy Múlafossur Cottage is where we’re going to stay, without doubt.
This gorgeous wooden cabin is located right by the famous waterfall, in a magical secluded setting surrounded by nature and some of the friendly furry locals (sheep and highland cows). And while the views outside are epic, the interior is just as much of a delight; all light timber panelling with tasteful and thoughtful design touches and furnishings.
This Faroe Islands airbnb is also super well-designed and can comfortably sleep four people, with two beds upstairs and a sofa bed in the living room downstairs. There’s no TV - but we can almost guarantee you won’t need it with the beauty at your doorstep! It’s an incredible place for couples, young families, and those seeking adventure and endless hiking (of which there is plenty nearby!).
At the moment there’s just one cottage on the property, but the family who own it have plans to eventually build more and create a lovely secluded little community here.

MYKINES | FAROE ISLANDS AIRBNBS
Home to just 12 full-time residents, a lighthouse, and a few hundred thousand impossibly cute and clumsy Puffins during the summer, Mykines is one of the most isolated islands in the Faroe Islands archipelago — and an essential stop on any traveller’s Faroe Islands itinerary (read our guide to the island here).
While the vast majority of travellers to Mykines are only there for a day trip (there are multiple ferries a day), staying overnight can be a wonderful way to soak up everything the island has to offer, as well as giving you access to its highlights long before the day trippers arrive in the morning.
It is worth pointing out that the ferry to Mykines only operates between May 1 - August 31, and can often be cancelled to inclement weather. Getting ‘stuck’ on the island for longer than anticipated has been known to happen, so factor this into your planning!
CHARMING COTTAGE MYKINES
This quaint cottage from 1919 is a super authentic taste of life on Mykines, equipped with everything you need for a comfortable stay more than 100 years later.
Situated near the front of Mykines village, the wood-panelled cottage is warm and cosy with beautiful views out over the village and rest of the island from every window.
The cottage has a full kitchen with a hob and all-important coffee maker, super fast wifi (although switching off and immersing yourself in the surrounds here is definitely recommended!) and a TV, along with heating, hot showers, and a washer/dryer if required.
The cottage sleeps six in two rooms, and would suit a group of friends or family travelling together perfectly.

MYKINES COTTAGE WITH BUNK BEDS
This Mykines Cottage is owned by Heini, who was our incredible guide during our Mykines day trip — and his enthusiasm and passion for the island he’s lived on his whole life is reason enough to book this little Faroe Islands airbnb!
The cottage is a great budget option for those travelling with a small group. It’s one room made up with beds (two bunk beds), a small table with chairs, plus a microwave oven, small hob, kettle, and sink. There are free public toilets nearby, and hot showers (20 DKK) just a minutes’ walk away too.

SAKSUN | FAROE ISLANDS AIRBNBS
Isolated and breathtakingly beautiful, the little hillside village of Saksun on Streymoy is one of the hotspots that put the Faroe Islands on the map (or at least, the Instagram map).
This is due in part to ‘the Saksun House’, a cute little grass-thatched cottage perfectly nestled into the valley overlooking a striking coastal inlet. It’s quaint, gorgeous, and seems so quintessentially Faroese it’s hard to describe.
While the famous Saksun cottage is cute (please, please, don't trespass to take photos of it - we explain why here!), we’re of the firm belief that Saksun and its surrounds is so much more impressive than the little cottage that made it famous.
From hiking to Tjornuvik, exploring Dúvugarður, and wandering along the tidal Saksun beach lagoon, basing yourself at an airbnb in Saksun for a few days is the perfect way to escape the world and get back in touch with nature for a while.
SAKSUN HOUSE WITH PANORAMIC VIEW
This stone-walled, turf-roofed cottage is the ultimate quiet retreat, a great place to get re-inspired by nature or finally write that novel you’ve been putting off (jokes.. but not really?).
Cosy and rustic, the little cabin is perfect for solo travellers or a couple, and has everything you’ll need for a comfy stay; quality oven, hob, and a living room made doubly snug with an indoor fireplace and epic views over the Saksun coastal inlet. There's also a Bose speaker system to enjoy some chilled out tunes while gazing out the window.
Outside, there’s a wood-fired hot tub which can be used for an additional fee - the perfect place to relax and unwind in the spectacular natural surroundings. Keep an eye out for some of the property’s fluffy residents too; a family of geese and some of the local sheep have been known to pay visits at times!

This Spacious Saksun House is an awesome Faroe Islands airbnb option for groups travelling here, with plenty of space for 10 people in 4 big rooms (8 beds).
The house is located right next to the old Saksun church, which was reassembled here in 1858, and the local museum, Dúvugarður, in a 17th-century farmhouse. It’s full of old-world charm, from the mid-century furniture through to the many bookcases and paintings on the wall — although like so many airbnbs in the Faroe Islands, you'll probably be so captivated by the views out the window you'll be too distracted to read!

About an hour from Tórshavn, the town of Klaksvik on the island of Borðoy is the Faroe Islands’ second-largest town.
If you’re planning to spend a reasonable amount of time in the northernmost part of the Faroe Islands archipelago, particularly for visits to the islands of Kalsoy (for Kallur Lighthouse), Eysturoy and Kunoy, then it’s definitely worth looking at booking a few nights in Klaksvik, where the ferry leaves from.

The Farmer’s House is the airbnb you book when you’re seeking a return to nature and an escape from the hustle and chaos of modern life.
Located next to a working sheep farm of over 150 furry friends (probably one of the prettier ones in the world!) surrounded by greenery all around and beautiful ocean views to one side, this is the epitome of a quiet, peaceful stay.

The Leisure Pearl is a newly restored holiday house from the 1920s, in the quiet, picturesque village of Leynar on Streymoy island.
Just 25-minutes drive from Tórshavn, Leynar is somewhat of a local secret; on (admittedly rare) warm, sunny days in the Faroes, this is where the locals flock to soak up some rays on the beach and take a dip in the icy waters. If you’re looking to stay somewhere for a more authentic Faroese experience, this is definitely a spot to consider.
This traditional-style house actually looks over the pretty beach, and while the exterior has all the old-world charm, the interior was recently renovated with super modern touches and contemporary design.
