It’s a strong statement, sure, but it’s also one we’re willing to stand by, considering we once spent 6 glorious weeks living there under the glorious summer skies ourselves.
Hvar's popularity as a summer destination means that when it comes to finding a place to rest your head at night, there are hundreds upon hundreds of apartment listings to sift through, with everything from palazzos fit for royalty right through to cheap and cheerful private rooms.
We've previously written a comprehensive guide to where to stay on Hvar with all the best luxury stays, boutique hotels, and hostels on the island, but as a good majority of the accommodation to be found is actually authentic apartments and Airbnbs, we figured it was high time we released our Hvar island airbnb and apartment guide too!
From working out which gorgeous medieval town to base yourself in, which beaches you want to be close to, and which apartments will suit your group size, travel budget and preferences, we’ve narrowed down the selection of the best Hvar airbnbs and apartments for you in this guide. WHERE TO STAY ON HVAR | AT A GLANCE
HVAR TOWN | Hvar island's heart. Known as a glitzy party destination, though tranquility can still be found. Has the most Airbnb options, but expensive during peak season.
STARI GRAD | Best for those seeking culture and history. The oldest town on Hvar, Stari Grad is charmingly rustic, far more laidback than Hvar town, and ever so slightly cheaper. It's 20-30 min by car / bus from Hvar, and our favourite town on the island
VRBOSKA | The smallest town on the island. Best for those looking for authentic Dalmatian experiences, relaxation and the quiet life. Recommended for shorter stays and has unique airbnb options.
JELSA | Best for nature lovers. Charming town flanked by pine forests, with local wineries and plenty of beaches nearby. More affordable than Hvar and Stari Grad, but unless you have a car to get around, recommended for shorter stays.
HVAR TOWN AIRBNBS & APARTMENTS
Hvar town, the island’s best-known and most visited town, is far and away one of the most beautiful Mediterranean towns we've ever laid eyes on.
The largest selection of Hvar’s Airbnbs and apartments can be found in Hvar town, ranging from cheap and cheerful right through to ancient former palaces fit for modern royalty. We’ve included more options here (from splurge to budget) than in the other towns on the island due to this huge selection, and the likelihood that most visitors to the island are likely to stay in Hvar town during their visit.
The heart of town can be very noisy, especially at night, but there are plenty of quiet stays to be found within walking distance from the action too.
These are our favourite Hvar town Airbnbs and apartments:
VILLA VARDA LATICA | LUXURY
If there was one place we would splurge on during our travels to Hvar town without a second’s hesitation, it would undoubtedly be Villa Varda - Latica. After all, how many times can you say you lived like royalty in a 15th-century Gothic mini palace?! Exactly.
You’ll find this three-story heritage-listed former palace (also known through its 500-year history as Bevilaqua House) down one of our favourite cobblestoned laneways in Hvar’s old town, next to the 14th-century Church of St Annunziata. Lovingly restored by host Severo, the villa is a stunning, luxurious stay full of thoughtful touches that are fit for a modern travelling king or queen (and 5 of their friends).
Everything in Hvar town is within a (cobble)stone’s throw away from the villa’s heavy wooden front door; the Riva, St Stephen’s square, and the best cafes, restaurants, and nightlife options can be reached on foot easily.

It’s another splurge option, but for those travelling with a group of friends or family (up to 8 people) this 3-story luxury 5-bedroom, 6-bathroom villa right next to Bonj and Hula Hula beaches is like your own personal beach retreat. There are two separate kitchens for cooking up fresh feasts, a refreshing outdoor pool for those hot summer afternoons, a spacious private garden and everything you could need to feel right at home.
Great for families or a group of friends on a summer getaway, the villa is modern, spacious, and full of one-of-a-kind touches for the perfect stay. In the evenings, cook up some fresh produce on the BBQ grill in the gazebo and enjoy a long, balmy evening with loved ones on the terrace.

MAMMA MIA APARTMENTS, HVAR TOWN CENTRE | MID-RANGE
Just outside of Hvar town centre near the Franciscan Monastery, you’ll find Mamma Mia Oaza, a light, bright block of apartments made for travellers.
Bright and inviting, with a small modern kitchen, air conditioning (a must in summer!) and all the usual mod-cons, it’s a gorgeous little stay made even nicer thanks to the owner’s hospitality. From here, it's just a few minute’s walks from here to the main square and town centre, and all the markets, restaurants, and bars there. The pretty cove of Beach Križna Luka is also just 5 minutes away by foot.
There are 4 apartments available to book: two one-bedroom apartments sleeping two people, and another two one-bedroom apartments with a sofa bed in the living room (so sleep 3). The highlight of each of these Hvar Airbnbs is their balconies — and the large terrace flanked by trees and pots of lavender at one — with views over Hvar town and the fortress. APARTMANI AD HVAR | MID-RANGE
Fringed by towering pines and olive and lemon trees, family-run Apartmani AD Hvar is a peaceful hideaway for those seeking solace and relaxation, while still being close enough to the action.
The main drawcard is, of course, the breathtaking sunset views of the Pakleni islands channel and the open sea from the balcony - but the apartment itself is cheerful and has everything you’d need, the hosts are wonderful, and the peace and quiet invaluable on such a busy island.
This Hvar Airbnb is located in a quiet part of town, past Hula Hula beach (it’s up the hill from Falko Beach Bar - one of our fave spots on the island!). The centre of town is about a 15-minute walk away along the pretty coastal road scented with wild jasmine.

The studios are clean, bright and cosy, and well-designed to fit all you might need during your stay in. Ivana, the host, also shares bucketloads of local tips and recommendations to maximise your sightseeing and enjoy the best of the island!

THE BEST STARI GRAD AIRBNBS
The historic town of Stari Grad is our favourite on the island. Laidback, friendly, and charmingly rustic, it’s the antithesis of the glitz and party vibe found in Hvar town, and as such it draws a totally different crowd.
Stari Grad is all about savouring the beautiful stone streets, picturesque squares, brilliant boutiques, galleries and restaurants, endless Aperol spritz (a prerequisite for us!), and crystal clear blue bays slowly and peacefully.
Airbnbs are the most common accommodation type in Stari Grad, and its quiet, local streets offer the perfect opportunity to soak up authentic Dalmatian life.
DOLCE TERRA | LUXURY
An ancient stone animal stall transformed into a boutique oasis; Dolce Terra is a bohemian, design-forward luxury villa perfect for a slow holiday. Every corner of this special Stari Grad airbnb is like it’s been lifted straight from the pages of a travel magazine, with reclaimed wood and local stone furnishings, chic decor, and intentional detail.
The villa sleeps 8 in 3 bedrooms, while the private pool, garden and barbecue make for the perfect lazy summer evening spent with loved ones. Enjoy the scent of wildflowers and the breeze through the olive and almond trees surrounding the property as you relax in this perfect slow retreat!

HOUSE HERITAGE, SQUARE ŠKOR | MID-RANGE
Of all the pretty little town squares found in Stari Grad (and there are plenty), none compare to the quaint, flower-covered Square Škor - which is where you’ll find the beautiful House Heritage.
Our favourite place in Stari Grad to soak up the history, the square was formed by a small channel in the 17th and 18th centuries and lived a previous life as a shipyard before being covered and flanked by the distinctive Dalmatian stone terrace workers’ houses with stone staircases you see today. Staying at House Heritage will give you the chance to go back in time and immerse yourself in the town’s ancient history while also enjoying all the comfort of a renovated modern stay.
The house is a 2-bedroom, 2-bathroom with a fully equipped kitchen and stylish furnishings. Full of rustic details, plenty of greenery, and the most gorgeous enclosed courtyard imaginable (with a pizza oven!), you'll be hard-pressed to actually find the desire to leave and explore the island. But when you do, House Heritage’s location in the centre of town, surrounded by the best restaurants, galleries, cafes and boutiques, and seconds from the beachfront makes it the absolute best option for anyone wanting to explore Croatia’s oldest city (you better believe it’s where we’ll be staying next time we visit Stari Grad!).

TOWN HOUSE ROSARIO | MID-RANGE
Aside from the fact that Town House Rosario is probably our dream property - a typically Mediterranean stone villa tucked away behind a wrought iron gate with pops of green and stunning wooden details - this Stari Grad apartment is an absolute dream stay.
Recently renovated in a stylish, traditional fashion, host Rose has left no detail unfinished, from the vaulted wooden-beamed ceilings to the plush furnishings and the fully-stacked bookcase to the fireplace for those visiting out of season. In addition to the one-bedroom apartment with equipped kitchen, there are also private rooms available, which means if you’re travelling with a group, you could book the whole property and make use of all its facilities together.
All guests also receive a 20% discount on the in-house spa… dreamy!

PENTHOUSE APARTMENT IN HEART OF STARI GRAD | MID-RANGE
Putting aside the fact that hosts Imogen, Matt, and their little pup Maisy are basically living our dream after relocating to Hvar island and renovating a rustic stone house full of character, the Old Townhouse really is an amazing Airbnb in Stari Grad.
You wouldn't know it to look at the photos now, but this traditional Dalmatian building had laid abandoned and in serious need of TLC for 50+ years before being given new life by the builder/interior designer duo.
The Penthouse has kept the traditional vibe of the area, with stone facades and a vaulted ceiling with exposed beams, while transforming into a luxurious, design-forward space full of homely touches. It's light, bright, airy, and eco-conscious too, having been designed sustainably using hemp-lime plaster walls, rattan furniture and bamboo linens.
In addition to this penthouse Airbnb, the hosts also have another studio apartment in the same building (separate entrance) worth checking out if your dates aren't available here.
You'll find the Old Townhouse in a peaceful square in the heart of Stari Grad, with the best of Stari Grad's beaches, restaurants, bars, and boutiques on your doorstep.

HOUSE OLIVA | MID-RANGE
Surrounded by olive trees, House Oliva is a peaceful hideaway for those seeking an escape from the world, while still being close enough to town to enjoy all that it offers.
Ideal for a couple or family with kids, this detached house comes with a large fenced garden, modern swimming pool and outdoor area, plus light, bright, simple modern interiors with everything you need for your stay, including bicycles for exploring the island. Plus the all-important coffee machine, of course.
You'll feel like you've really assimilated into Dalmatian life in your own private villa, but if you tire of days by the pool, the beach is just a 150m walk away, while the centre of Stari Grad is just a few minutes by foot too.

CASA DELLE ROSE | BUDGET
Another traditional stone house given new life, Casa delle Rose is an unforgettable Stari Grad Airbnb experience for those seeking a taste of authentic Croatian life.
Newly renovated using local and natural materials, the rustic stone house pays respect to its traditional history by keeping its romantic stone archways and atrium while creating a modern, eco-friendly retreat. It’s made even more special by their support of local artists, whose paintings decorate the walls of the house.
You’ll find everything you need for a perfect stay in this 2-bedroom house, along with two bicycles, two sun beds (that you can take with you to the nearby beach), and four yoga mats — perfect for a slow morning stretch in the vine-covered courtyard.
Do note that parking isn’t available at the property as it’s in a pedestrian zone, but there is a private parking space about 300 metres away (just let the host know that you need it).

UNIQUE STONE APARTMENT WITH PATIO | BUDGET
Occupying the ground floor of a centuries-old family home, this recently-renovated rustic stone apartment in Stari Grad is the perfect base for your adventures on this side of the island.
The exposed beams and stone facades hint at its history and give this Stari Grad Airbnb a truly authentic Dalmatian character - but with all the modern comforts you'd expect. Ideally for two people but able to accommodate 4 using a sofa bed, it also has a cute little patio with chairs, a table, and a BBQ for use, as well as a full kitchen, A/C, wifi, etc.
The house is in a typical narrow Dalmatian alley (our favourite nooks and crannies to explore!), and super close to both the bus stop that connects the other Hvar island towns and the ferry terminal to the mainland.

THE BEST AIRBNBS AND APARTMENTS IN VRBOSKA
A cute fishing village at heart, Vrboska is the island’s smallest town and has been settled since ancient times. It has a wealth of history for those willing to step off the well-beaten Hvar trails and enjoy a unique taste of local life.
Some of Hvar island’s most unique Airbnbs can be found right here, from glamping tents to wellness villas that are a destination in themselves. Some of our favourite beaches in Hvar are within striking distance of Vrboska, Hvar town is a 20-30 minutes drive away, plus there’s a well-known nudist beach nearby for those interested!
These are our favourite apartments and Airbnbs in Vrboska:
PLAGE CACHÉE GLAMPING | LUXURY
Best for | adventurous travellers seeking to get away from it all
Hidden amongst the towering pine forests and built right on the edge of a gorgeous clear bay about a 5-10 minutes drive from Vrboska town (and 10 from Stari Grad), the four handcrafted safari tents of Plage Cachée are the epitome of a unique, luxurious glamping experience.
Each tent is fully equipped with private bathroom facilities and beautifully furnished with super bohemian wood and metal details. You have a private deck overlooking the ocean (hello morning swims!), and there’s also a communal kitchen area (and kitchen garden!) with everything you could need whilst there. Alternatively, your hosts can organise everything on your behalf too!
This is the kind of place you stay when you want to feel the static in your brain ease and the tension knots in your back from work finally unwind; the kind of place where days are dictated by sunrise and sunset, and by slowing down to savour the small moments that make up your day.

HOUSE TIA, CENTRAL VRBOSKA | BUDGET
This 2-bedroom stone house in the heart of Vrboska town is an absolute gem. Blending old and new worlds together perfectly for a true taste of traditional Dalmatian life; rustic and traditional from the outside, it’s a modern, comfortable stay on the inside.
House Tia is a great Vrboska apartment option for families or groups of friends travelling together, with 2-bedrooms (one double, one single) and a living room sofa bed (accommodating up to five all up). There’s a fully-equipped kitchen, air-conditioning, coffee machine, and a washing machine too. There’s free parking on site, a supermarket just a couple of minutes walk away, and plenty of beautiful beaches are just a stone’s throw away.

APARTMENTS HABEK, BASINA COVE | BUDGET
This one’s for travellers looking for a truly relaxing retreat by the sea.
Apartments Habek is actually set in Basina Cove, a few km from Vrboska town (so be aware that it’s about a 30-min walk into town if accessibility is an issue and you don’t have a car!) — but its a small price to pay for the view from the terrace, peace and quiet, and being right on the water in our view.
Choose from a range of spacious and comfortable studios or 1-bed apartments, each with a fully-equipped kitchen. Even better, each has either a balcony or terrace made for those long, balmy summer evenings with a crisp wine and fresh-cooked seafood dinner!
Surrounded by nature, it’s a hidden paradise on the island. And when you want to wash away the heat of the day? Simply head down the steps from the property and jump straight into the sea. Perfecto.

THE BEST AIRBNBS IN JELSA | HVAR AIRBNBS
Peaceful and pretty, flanked by pine forests and a crystal clear bay, Jelsa is a lovely place to relax for a few days. There are a number of great wineries nearby, the beaches are beautiful, and the tranquillity is unbeatable.
You’ll find more budget options on this side of the island, so if you’re looking for a more affordable base than that of Hvar town, Jelsa is your place!
As with Vrboska, Jelsa is a lovely town but it is very quiet, so if you’re looking for an Airbnb with more ‘vibe’, perhaps look to Stari Grad or Hvar town.
These are our favourite Jelsa Airbnbs:
SEAVIEW APARTMENT RIGHT NEAR THE BEACH SIDE APARTMENT, JELSA | MID-RANGE
Want a holiday apartment where you can walk out your front door and dive into the sea? Welcome to the Seaview Apartment.
This bright apartment is basically on the water; the balcony overlooks Mina bay where guests can jump straight in from the stone beachfront. If you're after a sand beach, there's one just a couple of minutes' walk away.
The Airbnb is perfect for two guests, with one bedroom, a large terrace, plus all the essentials for a summer holiday stay. Start your mornings with a coffee in the sun, cool off in the afternoons with a swim, and watch the sun go down with views over Jelsa town and beyond. Perfect!

HVAR AIRBNBS | KNOW BEFORE YOU GO
LOCATION IS IMPORTANT
Hvar island may look small on a map, but the various towns are separated by some decent hills, some not-so-decent roads, and public transport that doesn't run overly frequently.
Choosing the right base will help immensely when it comes to seeing and doing all that you want while you're on the island (read our guide to the best things to do here). We’ve jotted down a quick guide to the towns below to help you choose the best place, and therefore Airbnb, on Hvar.
BOOK YOUR AIRBNB/APARTMENT WELL IN ADVANCE
During the peak of summer, Hvar town sees up to 20,000 tourists per day flood its streets.
As you might have imagined, such a huge increase in footfall also means a shortage of available Airbnbs, so if you’re planning to visit during the months of late June - August, be sure to book yours as early as possible to maximise availability and pricing.
IT’S PRETTY EXPENSIVE DURING PEAK SEASON
Gone are the days of Hvar being an affordable getaway; the boom has well and truly happened and this is now one of the most popular Mediterranean holiday destinations.
Consequently, hotels and Airbnbs have raised their standards - and their prices - significantly in the past few years. If you're travelling to Hvar during the summer peak, you'll be paying a premium compared to other months.
For budget travellers, we recommend looking at Airbnbs in other towns on Hvar or visiting in shoulder season instead (we visited in April/May and paid two-thirds of summer Airbnb prices, and even less for food/activities).
WHY STAY IN AN APARTMENT / AIRBNB ON HVAR?
Historically, Croatians (and those from further abroad) have spent their summers in apartments and beach houses along the vast Dalmatian coast.
As Croatia became an independent country, and tourism returned, these apartments became accommodation options for travellers the world over, and as such are easily the most popular accommodation in the area.
They’re clean, the hosts are super friendly and mostly come with kitchens, which for the budget conscious among us, is a big plus.
Additionally, we recommend Airbnbs and Apartments on Hvar because:
Local experience | Nothing beats getting to know a destination through the tips and eyes of your local host. Our hosts on Hvar shared so much knowledge, gave us travel tips, helped us sort out our itineraries, and even brought us jars of local produce.
Affordability | Hotel accommodation on Hvar can be expensive, especially in the summer months. Staying in an apartment or Airbnb is a great option for budget travellers, especially as having your own kitchen and facilities helps keep costs down dramatically!
Unique stays | Who's going to say no to spending a week in a 16th-century stone palace, or a glamping tent overlooking the sea? Thought so.
Sharing economy | Historically, guesthouses have always been the most common form of accommodation on Hvar anyway. In days gone by, local hosts would be at the ferry terminal waiting to barter their rooms and prices with arriving travellers. Booking.com and Airbnb have basically just shifted this economy online to make it easier for all!

WHAT TO DO ON HVAR

READ OUR GUIDES:
HOW LONG SHOULD YOU SPEND ON HVAR?
Forever? If only.
Honestly, we could spend our whole summer on Hvar Island and still not be satisfied (hell, we lived on the Island for six weeks and it was nowhere near enough time!)... but we think spending between three-five nights on Hvar is ideal.
Three - five nights might sound like a lot to those wanting to Island hop throughout the summer, or for those backpackers on an epic overland trip through Europe, but Hvar is hands down one of the most beautiful islands in the Mediterranean, and there are just so many things to do on Hvar that make it impossible to see and enjoy in just a few days.
WHEN TO VISIT HVAR
We strongly believe visiting the island during the shoulder seasons (April - early June, Sept-Oct) is the best time to visit. The weather is still delightful, the vibe lively, but the crushing summer crowds and heat haven’t descended yet.
Visiting during the peak summer months of mid-June to August means you'll have to contend with upwards of 20,000 daily visitors to the island, which in our opinion is both unsustainable, a detriment to the island, and also jolly unpleasant to deal with as a traveller!
TRAVEL INSURANCE FOR CROATIA
We firmly believe that if you can't afford travel insurance, you really can't afford to travel. As the current pandemic has taught many; things can go wrong anywhere in the world and insurance is often the only way of mitigating any issues with minimal expense or stress for you.
