A Guide to the Gorgeous Padang Padang Beach, Uluwatu
Experience the breathtaking beauty of Padang Padang Beach, the most popular beach in the Bukit Peninsula of Bali. This paradise is surrounded by towering limestone cliffs and lush jungles, which is perfect for surfers and families alike. Get our insider tips on entry fees, the best time to visit, and more in our comprehensive guide.
A literal slice of paradise, Padang Padang Beach (otherwise known as Pantai Padang Padang) is the most popular, and arguably the best in the Bukit Peninsula (our opinion of course, but we dare you to disagree!).
As you descend a flight of stairs carved into the rugged cliffside, a dramatic panorama reveals itself - a turquoise cove framed by towering limestone cliffs and dense green jungle. Once you reach the velvety white sand, the breathtaking natural beauty that surrounds you will make you forget about the beaches of Canggu in a heartbeat.
This is paradise, the Bali beach of dreams.
When the tide is low, the crystal-clear waters gently caress the powdery white sand, providing a near-endless coral-fringed lagoon to enjoy a swim.
But Padang Padang is not just a feast for the senses - it's also a surfer's paradise, renowned for its world-class surf breaks. Surfers come from all over the globe to ride the powerful and consistent swells of the reef break, while beginners can take lessons from nearby surf schools to catch their first wave (warning though - it gets hella busy, so arrive early!).
And along the shore, there’s a vibrant and laid-back beach culture that is quintessentially Bali, with local vendors offering coconuts, and mouthwatering street food delights such as grilled corn.
A visit to Padang Padang Beach isn’t without its challenges - it gets busy, there’s an unexpected entry fee that catches most people out, and parking can be an issue. But overall, a visit to Padang Padang is one of the best things to do in Uluwatu.
In this guide, we share everything you need to know, including when to visit, entry fees, and other essential information to enjoy the perfect day at the beach.
This is Padang Padang.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT PADANG PADANG BEACH
Not to be hyperbolic, but expect a slice of heaven you never wish to leave - Padang Padang really is that beautiful.
After paying your entrance fee, there are a set of stairs that guide you through a boulder to the beach below (it’s oh-so Ulu). Once at the base, you’ll notice food and drink vendors, and souvenir stands to your right and left, and a set of umbrellas to shield tourists from the unrelenting tropical sun (we highly recommend securing a position here).
Depending on the tide, the beach will either be wide and expansive, or a slither of velvety white sand in which to place your towel. Either way, it pays to arrive early to secure the best spot on the beach - either under an umbrella as mentioned above, or to the left of the beach at the base of the cliff, where entry to the shallows is easier than to the right.
For those who’ve come to chill, the beach and its waters are generally calm due to the surrounding coral reef. You can walk quite far out, and bathe in the turquoise sea. For families, it’s the most accessible beach to access in the area and has many little rock pools in which kids can frolic.
As the sun starts its slow afternoon descent, expect parts of, and eventually all of the beach to be shrouded in shadow. To be honest, this is a welcome relief from the piercing sun and as the last of the umbrellas are taken down, it leaves the beach feeling far more relaxed.
If you get hungry, there is a small range of beachside warungs to satiate your appetite - they’re generally packed with beer-swilling surfers, but they do a mean mee goreng. Further afield, some of the best cafes in Uluwatu are close by, including The Loft, The Place With No Name, and Ours.
SURFING AT PADANG PADANG BEACH
Padang Padang Beach is renowned for its world-class surf breaks, attracting surfers from around the globe. In fact, it’s on the world surfing tour and is home to the Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang.
Overall, the reef break delivers powerful and consistent waves, making it a popular spot for experienced surfers seeking an adrenaline rush. As stated on the Surf Atlas, “This is arguably Bali’s finest wave. A mega-shallow reef picks up the leftover swell pushed north by the Ulu cliffs and the whole thing lips up before turning into a perfect left that can handle serious size.”
Known to be quite heavy and can be challenging for inexperienced surfers, the waves are best left to the skilled (learn to surf in Canggu or Seminyak instead). However, there are still opportunities for intermediate surfers to catch a ride on the more manageable sets, and if you're a beginner, there are surf schools nearby that offer lessons for those looking to catch their first wave.
If you're travelling without your own board, there are several rental options available at the beach. The cost of renting a surfboard can vary depending on the shop, the length of the rental period, and the type of board you're looking for. Typically, a basic board rental will cost around 100,000-150,000 IDR per day (around $7-$10 USD), but prices can increase for higher-end boards or longer rental periods.
We suggest checking the surf report before visiting, here.
WHY IS PADANG PADANG SO POPULAR?
Like many popular tourist attractions in Bali (looking at you, Ubud), Padang Padang Beach was featured in the iconic novel and movie "Eat Pray Love", which explains why it’s so busy.
In the story, the protagonist Elizabeth is drawn to Padang Padang Beach, engaging in quiet reflection and seeking answers to life's most profound questions. As she immerses herself in the natural beauty of the beach, she begins to embrace the present moment and let go of the burdens of her past.
The picturesque scenery, with its hidden cove framed by majestic cliffs, catapulted Pantai Padang Padang from a sleepy surf break to one of Bali’s most famous beaches.
PADANG PADANG BEACH TRAVEL ESSENTIALS
WHERE IS PANTAI PADANG PADANG
Padang Padang Beach is located in Uluwatu, a popular coastal area on the southern coast of Bali, Indonesia. It’s about 30 km southwest of the main tourist hub of Kuta and about 18 km southwest of Denpasar, the capital city of Bali.
To reach Padang Padang Beach, you'll need to head to Uluwatu, which is known for its stunning cliffs, excellent surf breaks, and beautiful beaches.
HOW TO GET TO PADANG PADANG BEACH
To reach Padang Padang Beach in Uluwatu, Bali, there are several transportation options available. Here's a guide on how to get there:
BY SCOOTER // By far the best way to get to Padang Padang, especially for those staying close by. You can easily find scooter rental shops throughout tourist areas. From there, you can navigate to Padang Padang Beach using a navigation app or by following road signs to Uluwatu. Be sure to wear a helmet and exercise caution when riding.
BY CAR/TAXI // The most convenient way to reach Padang Padang Beach is by car or taxi. You can rent/hire a taxi, either through your accommodation or by using ride-hailing apps like Grab or Gojek. Just provide the driver with the destination "Padang Padang Beach" and they will take you directly to the entrance of the beach. It’s worth noting Gojek and Grab can’t pick you up there, however, we just grabbed a taxi back to Bingin for an affordable rate (IDR 100,000).
BY SHUTTLE // Many hotels and guesthouses in Bali offer shuttle services or can help arrange shared transport to popular attractions, including Padang Padang Beach. Inquire with your accommodation if they provide any transportation options or recommendations.
PARKING AT PADANG PADANG BEACH
Parking at Pantai Padang Padang can be found opposite the beach (see map). It’s actually a huge space, so you’ll have no trouble finding somewhere to safely park your scooter.
The parking fee at Padang Padang Beach is IDR 2,000.
PADANG PADANG BEACH ENTRANCE FEE
To access Padang Padang Beach you must pass through an entrance gate that leads down to the beach.
There is an entry fee (insane for Australians to comprehend!) to enter Padang Padang beach, which is IDR 15k (USD $1, AUD $1.50). However, this goes towards maintenance and upkeep of the beach area.
The entry fee for Padang Padang is cash only, so be prepared with your rupiah - we saw many people caught out by this.
Be careful of the monkeys as you walk down to the beach - they’re little thieves who love to terrorise humans by stealing anything they can, in return for food.
WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT PADANG PADANG BEACH
We visited Padang Padang Beach in June, right in the middle of the dry season, and it was absolutely wonderful.
This period of the year is the best time to visit Bali, and offers more favourable weather conditions and a lower chance of rain: expect sunny skies, warm temperatures, and minimal rainfall.
The sea is generally calmer during the dry season, making it safer and more enjoyable for swimming. It also presents better surfing conditions, with consistent and powerful waves at Padang Padang Beach, attracting surfers from around the world.
The one caveat about visiting during this time of year is that you must arrive early - we’re talking 9 am, to get a good position on the beach, or nab a spot under an umbrella. Fortunately, with a bit of shade, you can spend the whole day here.
A LITTLE ABOUT TIDES AT PADANG PADANG BEACH
Like most beaches in Uluwatu, Padang Padang is affected by the ebb and flow of the tides.
During high tide, the water level rises, covering more of the beach area and reducing the available space for sunbathing and other activities. Swimming during high tide can be challenging, as the waves can be stronger and closer to the shore.
Conversely, during low tide, more of the beach is exposed, creating wider sandy areas and calmer waters. Low tide is the best time to enjoy the beach.
It's important to note that Padang Padang Beach can be affected by changes in tides, especially during the wet season when the sea might become rough during high tide due to storms or heavy rain. Always check the local tide schedule before your visit to plan your beach activities accordingly.

EXPLORING BEYOND PANTAI PADANG PADANG
Uluwatu is filled with incredible beaches, attractions, clubs and restaurants, so if you’re planning to base yourself in Bingin, but want to explore beyond this idyllic paradise, here are a few things we recommend.
EXPLORE THE ULUWATU TEMPLE
A trip to Uluwatu is incomplete without a visit to the Uluwatu Temple.
The temple itself is beautiful and carries a lot of spiritual significance to the Balinese. However, our favourite part was exploring the trails and admiring the temple and cliffside views from a distance. Uluwatu Temple is perched on a cliff, which makes for some incredible photographs.
Consider visiting at sunset to watch the famous Kecak Dance takes place. Remember to book in advance (you can do so here), and that there are LOTS of pesky monkeys - many prowl the surrounding jungle, attacking tourists and being agents of chaos.

Uluwatu has a few lavish beach clubs for you to enjoy. By day, you can lounge by the perfect pools, sipping coconuts (or something else), indulging in the sun, and basically, living your best life.
These clubs overlook the ocean, so the views are immaculate. Come nightfall, these clubs turn into the best party in town. We’re talking live DJs, dancing, and delicious cocktails.
Savaya, Sundays Beach Club, Ulu Cliffhouse, and Omnia are some of Uluwatu’s finest beach clubs.
PRACTICE YOGA
For yogi’s keen for some holiday practice, Uluwatu is a burgeoning paradise which studios and fitness clubs popping up all over the place. Our favourite yoga studio in Uluwatu is The Space, which boasts stunning architecture, including huge bamboo buildings, a winding staircase, and a sound healing dome.
Upstairs, you can practice yoga with an amazing view, while downstairs, you can find a co-working space and a pretty yoga boutique.
There's also a cafe and bar next door in another beautiful bamboo structure.
Morning Light Yoga is another great option, offering one class every morning in an open-air, thatched-roof hut surrounded by lush jungle. Alternatively, La Tribu is another great option.

RESPONSIBLE TRAVEL IN BALI
Responsible, sustainable travel is what we’re all about here at TCW HQ, and this is especially true when we travel to places suffering from climate change and plastic pollution, such as Bali.
TRAVEL DURING SHOULDER SEASON | Shoulder season is the time before and after the peak season when things are quieter, cheaper, and more enjoyable (especially in the Med!). Travel then to reduce over-tourism, and extend the season for local operators
DON’T BUY BOTTLED DRINKS | Please, for the love of the ocean: DO NOT BUY SINGLE-USE PLASTIC BOTTLES! You'll understand why when you see a bunch of plastic bottles bob past you in the open sea. Buy one of these fantastic bottles instead
USE LESS WATER | To help reduce the pressure on water supplies, keep your water usage to a minimum. We know that’s hard to do on holidays, but quick showers, and turning the tap off when brushing your teeth, cleaning etc. really help
OCEAN-FRIENDLY TOILETRIES | Everything that goes down the boat drain ends up in the ocean, try and make sure all your toiletries, sunscreen, shampoo is as ocean-friendly as possible! Solid bars are a great place to start (see below to buy some eco-friendly toiletries).
DO YOUR OWN CLEANUPS | See rubbish on the beach, forest or town? Pick it up, and dispose of it properly. If every traveller helped out during their holiday, the beaches, oceans and forests would be a much happier place for it
DON’T USE PLASTIC BAGS | Pack a reusable tote and use these to carry your snacks, drinks, or new souvenirs instead
LEAVE NO TRACE | Limit your consumption of plastic, and opt for sustainable / zero-waste alternatives instead. Pack a reusable water bottle, bring your reusable coffee cup, and if you can’t sip your cocktails without a straw, bring a metal or bamboo one along instead. And never leave a trace...
BE ANIMAL-FRIENDLY | Observe sea creatures from a distance, don’t pick up wildlife like starfish or urchins, or grab onto turtles, dolphins, etc. If an animal wants to interact with you, it’ll approach you 🙂
SUPPORT THE LOCAL COMMUNITY | Visit a locally owned warung for a meal, buy which means both supporting the local economy and community and also giving you a real authentic experience.
ICE CREAM CONE | Bonus tip - eat your ice cream in a cone, rather than a cup and plastic spoon for the ultimate plastic-free indulgence!
