Where to stay in Cape Town: a guide to airbnbs, hotels, and hostels

Where to stay in Cape Town, South Africa | The Common Wanderer

Looking for where to stay in Cape Town? Our guide to finding accommodation in the Mother City has you covered, including the best suburbs to stay in Cape Town and why, along with our personal airbnb, hostel, and hotel recommendations!

Longtime readers of this blog will already be well aware of our deep love for Cape Town; its beauty, culture, and general vibe make it one of our favourite cities in the entire world

Choosing where to stay in Cape Town can feel like a tricky feat, especially for first time travellers. After multiple visits to the city over many months now, we feel we’re pretty well versed on the best places to stay, and how to find the best deals!

Most visitors to the city quickly realise that this is a place where your dollar goes a fairly long way. What ranks as a “budget” room here is often much nicer than elsewhere in the world, and comfy, welcoming airbnb, hostel and budget hotel options can be found in every corner of the city.

That said, those looking to splurge will also discover that some of the world’s most lavish, luxurious boutique accommodation can also be found right here where the Atlantic Ocean meets the slopes of Table Mountain too.

Aside from how much you want to spend, choosing the best place to stay in Cape Town also depends on what you want to see and do in the city, whether you’ll need transport links, and whether you’d like a buzzing city vibe or a seaside getaway.

In this guide to accommodation in Cape Town, we’ve listed the suburbs and locations that we feel make the most sense for travellers wanting to make the most of their time in the Mother City, along with our personal favourite parts of town - and the one suburb you should think twice about staying in.

OUR FAVOURITE SUBURB TO STAY IN CAPE TOWN: WOODSTOCK

-

We spent six weeks living in Woodstock, and it’s definitely our favourite suburb in the whole of Cape Town (read our Woodstock guide here)!

Once an industrial area of Cape Town with a somewhat questionable reputation, Woodstock has been reborn as one of the city’s most vibrant, hipster neighbourhoods.

Just 10 minutes from the CBD, a slew of third wave cafes brewing artisan coffee, buzzing craft breweries, hip eateries, and super trendy boutiques and design houses have popped up in its streets and former factories in recent years, while a thriving street art culture gives it an edgy-but-cool appeal.

It can still be a little rough around the edges, so be careful walking around at night and don’t flash valuables, but this up-and-coming suburb is affordable, easily accessible, and a perfect choice for those looking for a creative, hipster vibe.

WHERE TO STAY IN CAPE TOWN: THE CITY BOWL AND SURROUNDS

The place to be if you’re looking for easy access to all the must-see Cape Town highlights, along with a decent nightlife vibe.

-

WHERE TO STAY IN CAPE TOWN: THE CITY BOWL AND SURROUNDS

-

Nestled in the slopes of Table Mountain, the City Bowl is home to the Cape Town CBD, along with suburbs like Woodstock, Gardens, Oranjezicht, Tamboerskloof, Bo Kaap, and the V&A Waterfront area.

There are a few more suburbs nestled around the perimeter too, but for the most part we feel that, while lovely, they don’t make much sense for the average traveller as they have limited transport options, or access to Cape Town’s key attractions (and hence haven’t been included here).

-

THE CAPE TOWN CBD

Finding a place to rest your head in the CBD is easy; there’s something for absolutely every travel style here from super budget to supreme luxury. Long Street is the unofficial backpacker area with lots of hostels and watering holes, while Bree Street is the heart of all things gourmet and social, crammed with eateries, bars, and plenty of things to do.

However, we do have to warn you that this can be the busiest, and (by virtue of being at the centre of it all) also noisiest part of Cape Town!

GARDENS

Gardens is the laidback neighbour to the bustling CBD, with plenty of great eateries, shops, and things to do without the intensity or noise you might encounter in the centre of town (especially at night).

This part of town is great for those looking for a more ‘local’ experience; the area, particularly along ever-popular Kloof Street, is always buzzing with cool galleries, pubs, and popular eateries. In fact, before Bree St and Woodstock got their hipster-legs, Kloof Street was the place to go for a brilliant meal or cool cafe in Cape Town.

Its eclectic vibe definitely hasn’t changed! We recommend checking out Thali and The Power & The Glory, while an afternoon tea at the Belmond Mount Nelson Hotel is a pretty special experience.

Great for couples, young families, or those looking to hangout with more locals than fellow backpackers.

WHERE TO STAY IN GARDENS

AIRBNBS

ASHANTI LODGE GARDENS | A refurbished Victorian mansion in the foothills of Table Mountain, Ashanti Lodge is a super popular choice for backpackers and budget travellers looking for cheap accommodation in Cape Town without sacrificing comfort, fun, or a social vibe. There’s a pool, plenty of communal spaces, and cocktails and mountain views on offer in the famous Kumasi Bar. Breakfast is also included.

BOOK | Cloud 9 Boutique Hotel and Spa

BELMOND MOUNT NELSON HOTEL | The leafy grounds and grand buildings of the 19th-century Belmond Mount Nelson have long been regarded as one of Cape Town’s best  5-star hotels, previously frequented by the likes of Winston Churchill, John Lennon, and Leonardo DiCaprio. It’s expensive, but for those who able to splurge, it’s worth it to experience a slice of the city’s history

ORANJEZICHT & TAMBOERSKLOOF

On the very edge of the City Bowl, with Table Mountain and Signal Hill all around, the leafy suburbs of Oranjezicht and Tamboerskloof are a beautiful part of Cape Town.

Between the 17th - 19th centuries this was the city’s largest farm; today the terrace-lined streets are popular with young students and professionals alike. Accommodation here is guesthouses and airbnb style, and while the area is fairly upmarket it’s a nice insight to the lives of locals and the mountain views are more than worth it!

The Oranjezicht City Farm is worth a visit for some fresh organic produce and artisan goods.

V&A WATERFRONT

Just a stone’s throw away from the Cape Town CBD, The V&A Waterfront, with its epic views to both Table Mountain and the working Harbour, is one of the city’s best-loved spots for eating, shopping, and socialising.

Some of the best shops and restaurants in the city are here, so whether you’re after world-class cuisine, a quick caffeine hit, drinks with friends, or some luxury retail therapy, there’s always something exciting going on for tourists and locals alike.

The V&A Waterfront is also where many of Cape Town’s most lavish and splurge-worthy hotels can be found. Budget-friendly options are few and far between, but for those with cash to spare seeking star-treatment, this is where you’ll want to look. The area is very well-connected for tourists; the ferries for Robben Island depart from here, the City Sightseeing Hop-on Hop-Off bus main stop is here, and the walk into Cape Town CBD is 10-15 minutes.

WHERE TO STAY ON THE V&A WATERFRONT

HOSTELS

ATLANTIC POINT BACKPACKERS | Right by all the action on the V&A Waterfront, Atlantic Point also has all a backpacker could possibly want, from a pumping on-site bar and swimming pool, to a TV lounge and BBQ area (perfect for cooking a braai with your new hostel buddies!). They also do free breakfast - perfect for those on a budget.

BOOK | Atlantic Point Backpackers

HOTELS

ONE&ONLY CAPE TOWN | This is the ultimate celebrity luxury splurge; right on the V&A Waterfront with panoramic views over the lagoon and Table Mountain. One&Only are all about world-class service, and with so much to see and do (plus their outdoor infinity pool!) you’ll be thoroughly spoilt.

BOOK | One&Only Cape Town on Booking.com

THE SILO | If we had oodles and oodles of money, this is exactly where we’d stay. Built in the grain elevator portion of an historic grain silo, above the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary African Art (MOCAA), this is the epitome of luxurious, boutique accommodation in Cape Town. Focused on art and culture, its colourful, eclectic design and industrial vibe make it an insanely aesthetically pleasing hotel. It’s a $$$$$$ stay (well out of our budgets!), but one well worth it for those who can.

WHY YOU SHOULD THINK TWICE BEFORE STAYING IN BO KAAP

Nestled under Signal Hill, right on the edge of the Cape Town CBD, the cheerfully-painted rainbow houses of the Bo Kaap are unlike any suburb you’ll have visited before.

These are the streets of Cape Town’s predominantly Muslim Cape Malay population, and while the colourful (and very instagrammable) streets are inviting and bright today, the history that underlies them is complex and turbulent.

The area used to house slaves in the 18th and 19th centuries; when freedom finally came to them, the residents celebrated their long-subdued freedom by turning their homes into canvases and expressing their individual rights through the bright colours that are still used today.

The Bo Kaap survived the forced removals and housing destruction of the apartheid era, but today it faces a new threat in gentrification. As the area’s popularity has increased in recent years, so too has talk of new hotels, bars, and restaurant developments. Family businesses open for more than 50 years are slowly being shuttered up and driven out by modern, hipster businesses and hotels piggybacking off the unique and exotic vibe found here.

If you do choose to stay in Bo Kaap, we implore you to opt for homestay-style stays owned by local Cape Malay families, and ensure that your tourist dollars support the rich and vibrant local community - not the businesses that threaten to drive them out.

Alternatively, stay somewhere else in the city and instead spend some time wandering the streets and getting to know its history and culture — like on this Bo Kaap walking tour with a local who has called it home their entire life.

Where to stay in Cape Town: The Atlantic Seaboard

Postcard-perfect beaches and exclusive suburbs draped across the lower slopes of the towering Table Mountain.

-

WHERE TO STAY IN CAPE TOWN: ATLANTIC SEABOARD

-

The Atlantic Seaboard stretches from the V&A Waterfront, Green Point and Sea Point all the way down to Hout Bay, with postcard-perfect beaches and exclusive suburbs draped across the lower slopes of Table Mountain. The ocean views here are, obviously, spectacular, and many of Cape Town’s stars call it home.

For travellers, it’s the best place to watch sunset, enjoy a stunning beach holiday, and soak up a little luxury. While accommodation can be expensive, it is still possible to enjoy it all without an insane price tag too.

Personally, while the beaches of Clifton and Camps Bay are absolutely stunning, we probably wouldn’t base ourselves beyond Sea Point as they are a bit out of the way, and require either hiring a car or taking plenty of Ubers to be able to access all of Cape Town’s highlights.

In our view, there are more convenient places to stay in Cape Town for travellers.

-

GREEN POINT AND SEA POINT

Close enough to all the action and accessibility of the CBD and the V&A Waterfront, but with the more relaxed feel of a beachside town, the neighbouring suburbs of Green Point and Sea Point are two of our fave spots to stay in Cape Town!

On our most recent visit to the Mother City, we opted for an airbnb near the Sea Point Promenade, which always seems to be buzzing with locals and tourists taking in the ocean views or working out, and there’s a great mix of cool cafes and eateries to be found dotted through its streets.

Staying around these two suburbs is a great way to get that seaside village feel, without having to deal with the traffic or chaos of some of Cape Town’s more popular beachside town areas.

WHERE TO STAY IN SEA POINT

AIRBNBS

CAPE TOWN BEAUTY IN THREE ANCHOR BAY | Close to Green Point Park, Sea Point Promenade, MyCiti bus stops, and with lovely sea views. The Bootlegger, a great coffee shop is just minutes’ away too!

HOTELS

PROTEA HOTEL | Owned by the Marriott Group, the Protea is just 150m away from the lively Sea Point Promenade and ocean views. There’s also a plunge pool, while the V&A Waterfront is just 10 minutes away.

THE FOUR CLIFTON BEACHES

The four Clifton beaches are the beaches to be at during the Cape Town summer. Regarded as some of the most beautiful in the world, they’re clustered in pockets along the base of Lion’s Head. Each beach has something to offer (1, for example, is a sport-lovers paradise!), while Clifton 4 is the most popular thanks to being the largest and best for families.

This seaside suburb is one of Cape Town’s most expensive suburbs, with beach cottages on one side and architecturally designed masterpieces carved into the mountain side on the other. Be aware that Clifton is residential only - so you’ll need to walk to Camp’s Bay (details below) for restaurants, bars, shops, etc.

WHERE TO STAY IN CLIFTON

SIMPLE BEACH LIVING IN CLIFTON | Two-bedroom apartment overlooking the luxury of Clifton. Epic sunset views, and walking distance to the best stretch of beaches on the whole of the Cape Peninsula.

HOTELS

CAPE VIEW CLIFTON | Suites overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, with popular Clifton Beach Four just 800m away. Breakfast is included, and there’s a fitness centre and pool on site.

-

CAMPS BAY

If Clifton Beaches are the place to be at, then Camps Bay is the place to be, and be seen at.

Famous for its fine white sand, sparkling blue water, and the epic Twelve Apostles that tower above it, the palm-fringed beachfront is where tourists, locals, and celebrities alike rub shoulders. Lined with the trendiest of cafes, buzzing beach bars, and some of the most respected restaurants in the city, it’s a super popular summer hang out.

Watching the sun fall into the Atlantic ocean from Camps Bay and surrounds is somewhat of a Capetonian rite of passage too!

Given its popularity, expect some pretty hefty traffic jams during the warmer months. As mentioned earlier, both Clifton and Camps Bay are a little further from the city, and in our view, would be better served as day trips from more central Cape Town accommodation, rather than as your single base in the city.

WHERE TO STAY IN CAMPS BAY

HOTELS

DIAMOND HOUSE GUESTHOUSE | Diamond House Guesthouse, set on the slopes of Table Mountain in Camps Bay has views out over the Twelve Apostles, Lions Head and of the Atlantic Ocean. 20-min walk to the beach, and breakfast included

WHERE TO STAY OUTSIDE OF CAPE TOWN

Our favourite getaways from Cape Town to relax and unwind.

-

WHERE TO STAY OUTSIDE OF CAPE TOWN

-

Every traveller needs a holiday from their holiday at some point, and Cape Town is blessed with many wonderful getaways that are still in close proximity enough to be convenient, but feel worlds away from the hustle and bustle of big city life.

Two of our favourite getaways are the seaside fishing town of Kalk Bay, and the charming, historic (and utterly beautiful) rolling estates of the Cape Winelands area.

Here are our recommendations for where to stay there!

-

KALK BAY

At just 45 minutes from the CBD, quirky Kalk Bay might be an easy day trip from Cape Town, but we’d actually recommend spending at least a night down here to relax and enjoy the area.

One part sleepy little fishing village with a bustling working harbour full of colourful trawlers and the odd seal or two, another part trendy seaside village lined with buzzing cafes, quaint antique shops and cool boutiques, Kalk Bay is a charming, eclectic town perfect for a relaxing break from city life. It's also on the doorstep to False Bay adventures, so a great spot to base yourself from for these.

WHERE TO STAY IN KALK BAY

AIRBNBS

We recommend renting an airbnb rather than a hotel for your time in Kalk Bay, as there are plenty of old-time fishing cottages available to really soak up the atmosphere in.

BY THE SEASIDE COTTAGE | This cute self-contained cottage by the sea is close to the Kalk Bay Theatre, Bob's Bagel Café, The Railway House, and Echo Valley. Great location, and a lovely cosy feel.

BOOK | By the Seaside Cottage

THE OLD FISHERMAN’S HOUSE | The old fisherman’s cottage is, as the name suggests, a recently renovated historic cottage in Kalk Bay, and the end result is an almost Mediterranean-style beach hideaway.

BOOK | The Old Fisherman’s House

LUXURY APARTMENT WITH KALK BAY VIEWS | This apartment has everything a traveller could need, including an outdoor pool, gym access, and views over the bay from the terrace. It’s 3-bed too, so perfect for groups.

THE CAPE WINELANDS

Obviously this is not a city stay, but just 60-90 min from the CBD, the Winelands area is super accessible if you’ve got time to escape the confines of Cape Town for a little while. The Cape Winelands region is home to many of the country’s most famous, and delicious, wine estates. Expect to find rolling vineyards, towering mountain views, and historic colonial architecture.

Stellenbosch, South Africa's second-oldest town and arguably one of its prettiest, is the more popular choice amongst travellers in the region, with its oak-lined streets and plenty of Cape Dutch architecture. It’s also home to Stellenbosch University, and a number of the best restaurants in South Africa.

On the other hand, Franschhoek, originally the settlement of French Huguenots fleeing persecution in Europe, is a wonderful option for a weekend break; quieter, just as picturesque, and with French influences all around.

If you’re looking for a great Cape Winelands tour, we recommend this full-day tour through Stellenbosch and Franschhoek
