FLORENCE NEIGHBOURHOOD GUIDE | THE BEST AREAS TO STAY IN FLORENCE

SANTO SPIRITO / OLTR’ARNO

Our favourite place to stay in Florence. The cosmopolitan heart of the city, Oltr’arno is where the young and cool spend their time sipping Spritz in the piazza, and where wine bars, artisan boutiques, cute shops, and flea markets dot the district’s corners.

Located across the river Arno, adjacent to the historic centre of Florence, it’s a great alternative to staying in the city centre.

In the area, you'll find a great selection of lovely boutique hotels, AirBnB’s, and luxurious properties within 15 minutes of the main attractions.

We think it’s the best area to stay in Florence for foodies, wine lovers, and those looking to escape the crowds.

PROS | Hip, cosmopolitan, laid back, and filled with an incredible array of hotels, restaurants, bars, cafes, and attractions, Oltr’Arno is the best place to stay in Florence.

CONS | Becoming increasingly popular. Otherwise, nothing.

Overlooking Florence from the Boboli Gardens

CENTRO STORICO / PIAZZA DELLA SIGNORIA / DUOMO

The historic centre is the best area to stay in Florence for first-time visitors and sightseeing enthusiasts.

Here, you'll be in the heart of the city with everything right at your doorstep, from iconic landmarks to the tastiest local delicacies, and trendy boutiques.

Since this area is in high demand and can be crowded with tourists, the accommodation may be slightly pricier, but trust us, it's worth every penny to be in the centre of all action.

PROS | You’ll feel the overwhelming history of Florence’s historic centre. The proximity to some of Florence’s most iconic attractions, including the Duomo, Piazza Della Signoria, Palazzo Vecchio, and the Uffizi is attractive. There are also many excellent food options close by

CONS | As with any popular Italian city, it gets overwhelmingly busy in the historic centre. Hotels and apartments can often be small, dated, and noisy.

SANTA CROCE

Wondering where to stay in Florence for the hustle and the bustle? Santa Croce is the answer.

Located to the east of the historic quarter, Santa Croce is the student area, filled with vibing bars, clubs, restaurants, and coffee shops. If you’re young and want to party, this is the best area.

Despite its party reputation, Santa Croce is undeniably beautiful, and filled with local artisans and boutiques. It’s also home to Florence’s mini Duomo, the incredible Basilica Santa Croce, which hosts a vibrant farmers market on the weekends.

Be aware that the range of accommodation options is small, so we suggest booking in advance.

PROS | Located close to the major city attractions, but removed from the overwhelming amount of tourists. Feels more authentic, and has a wonderful weekend market at Piazza Santa Croce.

CONS | Limited hotel and other accommodation options

SAN LORENZO & SAN MARCO

Dotted with museums and galleries including the revered Accademia, as well as many parks, these are great neighbourhoods to experience the real Florentine culture.

Due to numerous budget-friendly accommodation options, this is the best area to stay in Florence without breaking the bank.

When it's time to delve further into the city centre's historic streets, you won't have far to go as must-sees are all within easy reach on foot.

PROS | Affordable, green, and close to the historic centre.

CONS | Lacking any real vibe, when compared to Oltr’arno or Santa Croce

SAN NICCOLO / PIAZZALE MICHELANGELO

Where the wealthy Florentines live, and it shows. Beautiful palazzos, stunning views, and excellent restaurants dot this corner of the city.

The area is postcard-perfect, and it’s just a short walk over the Ponte della Grazie to the historical centre. It’s the perfect answer to where to stay in Florence for couples, romantic souls, and honeymooners.

You'll find accommodation suitable for all types of budgets, including charming apartments overlooking the Arno River (however, there are limited hotels on offer compared to other areas).

PROS | The best views in Florence, including from Piazzale Michelangelo. Beautiful, safe, quiet, yet close to town

CONS | Limited hotel options, and can get busy during the evenings

Overlooking Florence cathedral from Piazzale Michelangelo

PORTA AL PRATO / SANTA MARIA NOVELLA

Home to Santa Maria Novella train station and direct links to the airport, Santa Maria Novella is one of the city’s most well-connected areas and lies within a 15-minute stroll away from the city centre.

It’s also home to the wonderful (and popular) Mercato Centrale, where you can grab a vast array of Florentine and Italian products - perfect if you plan to cook at your accommodation to save money.

It is, however, rough around the edges and can feel a little unsafe at times, so unless you’re keen to save money, choose one of the above neighbourhoods.

PROS | If location and budget are important considerations, this area is perfect - hotels are cheaper, and the historic centre of Florence is a short walk away. Plus, you can grab groceries at Mercato Centrale.

CONS | It’s rough around the edges and can feel a little unsafe at times

PRACTICING SUSTAINABILITY IN HOTELS

Responsible, sustainable travel is what we’re all about here at TCW HQ, and this remains true even when we stay in hotels.

Below are a few key ways to reduce your impact on the local environment and community when staying in hotels:

DON’T BUY BOTTLED DRINKS | Please, for the love of the ocean: DO NOT BUY SINGLE-USE PLASTIC BOTTLES! When you see a bunch of plastic bottles bob past you in the open sea, you’ll understand why. Buy one of these amazing bottles instead

USE LESS WATER | Sri Lanka suffers from extreme water shortages, particularly during the peak tourist season. To help reduce the pressure on water supplies, keep your water usage to a minimum. We know that’s hard to do on holidays, but quick showers, and turning the tap off when brushing your teeth, cleaning etc. really help

TRAVEL DURING SHOULDER SEASON | Shoulder season is the time before and after the peak season when things are quieter, cheaper, and more enjoyable (especially in the Med!). Travel then to reduce over-tourism, and extend the season for local operators

OCEAN-FRIENDLY TOILETRIES | Everything that goes down the boat drain ends up in the ocean, try and make sure all your toiletries, sunscreen, and shampoo are as ocean-friendly as possible! Solid bars are a great place to start (see below to buy some eco-friendly toiletries).

DON’T USE PLASTIC BAGS | Pack a reusable tote and use these to carry your snacks, drinks, or new souvenirs instead

READ | For more responsible travel tips, we also have this guide to reducing your plastic consumption on your travels, as well as this guide to the eco-friendly packing essentials we have with us on every single trip

BIODEGRADABLE WET WIPES | Keep clean without destroying the planet!

INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL ADAPTOR | You’ll need the right plug to keep your gear going!

EYE MASK | A travel essential to get a good night’s sleep just about anywhere

BIO-FRIENDLY TOILETERIES | Avoid damaging and chemical-heavy products and facial scrubs with microbeads altogether. We recommend Lush solid shampoo, conditioner and body wash bars, ocean-friendly sunscreen (Stream2Sea), a mooncup is a great investment for “that” week and Lip balm for the sun
